Many are tiny coral islands, either uninhabited or with a tourist resort. Others are large volcanic islands with high mountain peaks and draped in tropical rain forest. The classic South Sea Island shore predominates - a long curve of bright white sand fringed by palms and lapped by shallow pellucid seas. But beaches of black sand exist, rocky beaches too, even cliffs, though of no great height. There are dunes as well which shift with the forces of nature to reveal things long buried by time. Tourism around the islands is fantastic with several distinct commercial areas of both large hotels with lots of organized activities and small island beach resorts. There are many more remote regions offering small intimate luxury resorts on private islands and village stay guesthouses in breathtaking rural settings. The islands are renowned for their world class scuba diving sites, notably soft corals, as well as unbelievable reef surfing breaks and several excellent hiking trails. The rich culture and traditional villages add to the curiosity of this friendly island nation.
